Seedlings germination and development of Capsicum pubescens Ruiz & Pav. (Solanaceae) in the José Celestino Mutis Botanic Garden, Bogotá, D.C. - Colombia

Abstract

In order to develop the Biological Diversity Agreement objective of protecting, recovering and conserving the natural diversity, The Sustainable Use of the Natural Resources of the Capital City and the Region project, leaded by the José Celestino Mutis botanical garden, propagation and follow up studies of andean native species are being developed for the introduction of the species in rural communities of the Capital District to contribute to the diversification of traditional diets. The cold weather ají Capsicum pubescens (Solanaceae) was spread by traditional techniques taking morphometrical data of fruits and seeds. Once germinated, the plants were taken to following up eras, where following up control took place. Height, stem diameter, length and width of the leaves follow up control was taken for 150 days. The sizes of the seeds obtained from the collected fruits agree with what is reported for the Capsicum genera; it ranks from 2.5 to 5 mm and the number varies according to the fruit size. The germination of the ají takes place between day number 15 and 17 after the sawing; it agrees with what is reported in this study for substratum germination and sterile middle. The behavior of the rise in the different variables may respond to the functional equilibrium that exists between the growth of the different shoot organs and the radicular system, so the growth of one of them affects the other. However, it is still to realize how the assimilates are shared between the shoot and the root.
