Germination dynamics and seedling development in Plantago australis Lam. ssp. oreades (Decne) Rahn

Abstract

The investigation in the managing and sustainable use of the plant species with economic potential needs initially of the knowledge of the mechanisms of spread, the percentages of yield and the establishment percentages of the obtained material. In this respect, an essay was developed in order to obtain a preliminary description of the germination processes and seedling development of Plantago australis ssp. oreades, from the point of view of its dynamics and the yield percentages.

The percentages of germination were evaluated, as well as the effect that the presence or the absence of light causes on germination; the seedling development was described and the percentage of survival of the obtained seedlings was quantified. A high percentage of germination was obtained (94 and 99.4 percent) with the used treatments. As for the seedling development, it was observed that the emergence of the early leaf happened after two weeks and there was a sudden increase of the growth after the sixth week. The mortality percentage of the obtained plants was low (21.8 percent).
